One of the keystones of the work of the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability (DRC) is to address the gap in our understanding about the contexts in which violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation occur against people with disabilities, as well as identifying the risk factors for abuse and pinpointing factors for intervention.
Along with Monash University CEI partnered with the DRC on this critical piece of work and conducted a rapid evidence review of the published literature. The work was informed by policy teams at the DRC and included input from an advisory group of representatives from organisations that support people with disability ensuring the report is informative and relevant for all those impacted.
The full report was released in August 2021 and can be accessed here. We look forward to seeing these findings used in future research initiatives and policy reform in order to meaningfully address the serious issues that exist for people with disability.
Our report presents recommendations for policymakers, social care professionals and carers on how to better prevent violence, abuse, neglect, and exploitation experienced by people with disabilities.
