CEI Director in Singapore, Dr Cheryl Seah, explores how sensitive caregiving benefits children’s cognitive and mental wellbeing, in a webinar with Ms Sun Xueling, Minister of State for the Ministry of Home Affairs & Ministry of Social and Family Development.
Co-organised by CEI's partner the Centre for Holistic Initiatives for Learning and Development (CHILD) and Suncare SG, this webinar is part of the series, "Navigating Parenthood: Myths vs. Science".
Cheryl discusses the evidence for and practice of sensitive caregiving, based on an easy-to-read evidence insight published by CHILD. “Sensitivity” describes a caregiver’s ability to be aware of a child’s signals, and evaluate and respond to them in a meaningful, accurate and appropriate way.
A sensitive caregiver recognises the child’s bids for attention (especially when the child is distressed) and responds to meet needs, even when there are other competing demands. Responding to a child’s signals helps them develop a secure self and explore their environment more confidently, in the knowledge that their emotional and physical needs will be met.
